Notes From Das Boot 101 (I have a working scanner)

Istanbul 1999

We were on tour opening for Metallica and we had a show in Istanbul, it was a whirlwind twenty seven or so hours. A bit of weirdness, a lot of strong coffee and this guy. The Pencil Man. I’m pretty sure that Fatih Kalem is some kind of stationary company and the Pencil Man (shown with his pencil-ettes) walked through the crowd at the Metallica concert (some soccer stadium) handing out sharpened pencils to promote literacy. In reality they were handing out tiny weapons. The first band on the bill, some nameless local heroes were awful. Five string bass (held high), multi-colored parachute pants, a lot of leaping, and rap/metal. The crowd put up with them for about five minutes and then like an old western, the pencils (as tiny arrows) started flying at the stage. It was a siege. I was up there to see just how shitty the band was and thousands of sharpened pencils chased me off the stage, the band left soon after. I counted over 30 pencils sticking out of the front of their bass amp. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.
