From My Collection

I couldn’t find any other good Polka records, at least not as good as Stanky and his Pennsylvanian Coal Miners.   Here’s a couple of covers that I like for different reasons. The first is Very, Very, Villegas (columbia, 1956) a record by jazz pianist Enrique Villegas, it’s got a cool modern art thing going with a good use of photography. The second is Tito Puente and Friend, I would have thought he had more than one friend.

little known fact: In the fall of 1954, descendants of master builder john roebling were thrilled that Enrique Villegas agreed to use his left leg help support the brooklyn bridge while workers feverishly re-strung the broken cable (previously broken by other reckless jazz giants). This is an actual photograph of the event.

these are really great, yeah, the villegas for the “art shot” and also the orange sponsor/hi-fi sticker on the side and i love the disembodied head-of-tito illustration-its almost as if he’s “dive-bombing” us.
and his only friend, i feel bad.

  1. this is awesome. i am also surprised.
